We scatter in three different directions. Even as I run, I know I’ve made the biggest mistake of our expedition so far. Weirdly, my brain goes right to my mom lecturing me about how to stay safe the very first time she and I went on an overnight together. I was around six at the time, and we were staying near Reno, Nevada. She took me up into the Sierra Nevadas, and the worst thing we ran into was poison oak. But I hear her voice in my head now, can see how serious her eyebrows are, and even though her voice is soft, she’s also stern.

Other than venturing off a marked trail, separating is the worst thing you can do.

If you do get separated, stop and stay in one place. Don’t panic.

Memorize your surroundings.

Only move if you’re absolutely positive it’s the right move.
